Fifteen judges appointed to various Divisions of the High Court

The Presidency has announced that President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed 15 judges to various Divisions of the High Court to strengthen the administration of justice countrywide. The statement added that the judges were appointed in terms of s 174(6) of the Constitution. The Judicial Services Commission (JSC), chaired by Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng, held interviews with candidates from 7 to 10 October for appointments to the Bench of the High Court and the Electoral Court based on the JSC’s recommendations.

President Ramaphosa made the following appointments –

  • Ronald Deon Hendricks as the Deputy Judge President in the North West Division of the High Court in Mafikeng, with effect from 1 December 2019;
  • Phillip Horatius Sigqibo Zilwa SC as a judge in the Eastern Cape Local Division of the High Court in Bisho, with effect from 1 June 2020;
  • Motilal Sunil Rugunanan as a judge in the Eastern Cape Local Division of the High Court in Grahamstown, with effect from 1 December 2019;
  • Bulelwa Myra Pakati as a judge in the Eastern Cape Local Division of the High Court in Port Elizabeth, with effect from 1 January 2020;
  • Nyameko Wellman Gqamana SC as a judge in the Eastern Cape Local Division of the High Court in Port Elizabeth, with effect from 1 January 2020;
  • Nokuthula Sylvia Daniso SC as a judge in the Free State Division of the High Court in Bloemfontein with effect from 1 January 2020;
  • Avrielle Maier-Frawley as a judge in the Gauteng Division of the High Court with effect 1 January 2020;
  • David Makhoba as a Judge in the Gauteng Division of the High Court with effect from 1 January 2020;
  • Moleboheng Mamorena Pascalina Mdalana-Mayisela as a judge in the Gauteng Division of the High Court with effect from 1 January 2020;
  • Shanaaz Christine Mia as a judge in the Gauteng Division of the High Court with effect from 1 January 2020;
  • Marcus Lekgaloa Senyatsi as a judge in the Gauteng Division of the High Court in effect from 1 January 2020;
  • Dr Elmarie van der Schyff as a judge in the Gauteng Division of the High Court with effect from 1 January 2020;
  • Rean Strydom SC as a judge in the Gauteng Division of the High Court with effect from 1 January 2020;
  • Deidre Susan Kusevitsky as a judge in the Western Cape Division of the High Court in Cape Town with effect from 1 December 2019; and
  • Hayley Maud Slingers as a judge in the Western Cape Division of the High Court in Cape Town with effect from 1 December 2019.

The president has expressed his appreciation to the JSC for identifying judges who are capable of serving the nation and has expressed his best wishes to the newly appointed judges in their new roles.
