Judge President of the KwaZulu-Natal Division of the High Court in Pietermaritzburg, Judge Achmat Jappie, has sent condolences on behalf of the South African Judiciary to the family and friends of Judge Bhekisisa Mnguni, who passed away on 7 September 2021.

Judge President Jappie said his division was shocked at the untimely passing of Judge Mnguni. He pointed out that Judge Mnguni will be remembered as a benevolent person. ‘Judge Mnguni was a dedicated and astute jurist, who was known for his dedication to the rule of law and will be remembered fondly for his kind and welcoming spirit. His untimely death robs us of the opportunity to experience his future contribution to the judiciary,’ said Judge President Jappie.

Judge Mnguni was a judge in the KwaZulu-Natal High Court, and he was permanently appointed to that position in 2009. Prior to this he worked as an attorney from 1994 to 2008. In 2007 and 2008 he was appointed as an acting judge in the KwaZulu-Natal Division of the High Court. During his tenure as a judge of that division, he acted as a Deputy Judge President of the KwaZulu-Natal Division of the High Court in 2016. In early 2021 he was appointed as the Acting Judge President of the Competition Appeal Court.
