The Lexinfo InfoPack: Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 is a bibliography in electronic format containing a comprehensive list of references relating to the Consumer Protection Act (CPA).

The Act, which came into force in April last year, has changed the legal landscape in a number of respects, with its reach being felt in almost every branch of the law.

Accordingly, no practitioner can get away without at least a basic understanding of the Act.

That is where this e-book, one of two published to date by library and legal information consultants LexInfo CC, becomes a useful tool for practitioners.

The 51-page e-book comes in PDF format and can be viewed on a PC, laptop and tablet device with ease.

It is essentially a comprehensive research tool and is divided into reference sections on legislation (the Act, the Act in Bill form and parliamentary documentation, including links to parliamentary debates and questions and answers relating to the Act when in draft form); books, including chapters in books relating to the CPA; Government Gazettes; journal articles, which are arranged alphabetically by author, title and subject; internet resources; law firm newsletters; and theses.

Each reference item contains a brief summary of its contents and, where possible, a downloadable link to the relevant item.

The one reference item the InfoPack does not at present include is case law, but this will be added to the updates to the InfoPacks as and when the jurisprudence on the Act develops in the courts.

LexInfo is in the process of developing an InfoPack for the Companies Act 71 of 2008, with plans to publish e-bibliographies on other South African legislation in future. Currently the only other available InfoPack is on the National Credit Act 34 of 2005. The e-book on this Act includes case law references, including judgments from the National Consumer Tribunal.

There are two purchasing options available for the InfoPack: An annual subscription, which includes four quarterly updates, or they can be bought once off. The 2012 prices (including VAT) are –

  • subscription for the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008: R750
  • subscription for the National Credit Act 34 of 2005: R995
  • individual issues of the National Credit Act 34 of 2005: R248,95
  • individual issues of the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008: R187,50

To buy one or both of the InfoPacks, readers can phone (021) 674 4320 or 082 690 8890; e-mail info@lexinfo.co.za; or fax 086 589 3696. The latest editions of the InfoPacks can also be purchased online from www.kalahari.net
