President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed and announced the ministers who will serve in the seventh administration of South Africa and the Government of National Unity. This brought changes with new ministers in various ministries. The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development will be led by Minister Thembi Simelane, who is the second woman elected into the position. Various legal organisations have welcomed the appointment of Ms Simelane as the newly appointed Minister of Justice.

The Law Society of South Africa (LSSA) extended its congratulations to Minister Simelane on her appointment. The LSSA also extends its best wishes to Deputy Minister Andries Nel. President of the LSSA, Joanne Anthony-Gooden noted: ‘On behalf of the attorneys’ profession, the LSSA expresses its commitment to supporting Minister Simelane and her deputy in their endeavours. The LSSA is keen to collaborate closely with the new leadership to address the myriad of issues impacting the legal profession and its service to the public. Recognising the importance of this relationship, the LSSA eagerly anticipates a meeting with Minister Simelane at her earliest convenience to discuss these critical matters.’

The LSSA pointed out that it remains dedicated to upholding the standards and integrity of the legal profession, while ensuring that the needs and rights of the public are met. This appointment marks a significant opportunity for the legal community to work hand in hand with the Ministry to further the cause of access to justice for all South Africans.

The National Association of Democratic Lawyers (NADEL) extended its congratulations to Ms Simelane and Deputy Minister Nel on their appointments as the Minister and Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, respectively.

NADEL added that it stands firm in its commitment to support the Ministry in driving the transformative agenda of the legal profession in our country. ‘Together, we can address the challenges within our legal system and work towards meaningful reforms that benefit all members of society: Upholding human rights, ensuring justice, and reinforcing the rule of law will remain at the forefront of our efforts.’

The President of NADEL, Mvuzo Notyesi, stated that ‘we recognise the importance of creating an equitable, efficient, and just legal system that serves the interests of all citizens with the highest standards of integrity and professionalism and we warmly welcome Minister Simelane and Deputy Minister Nel to their esteemed positions. We are eager to collaborate closely with both leaders to advance our shared goal of a transformed and more equitable legal system.’

NADEL also expressed gratitude to the outgoing Minister Ronald Lamola and the outgoing Deputy Minister John Jeffery. The organisation pointed out that the contributions of Mr Lamola and Mr Jeffery have shaped the legal landscape during their tenure and their dedicated service has laid a solid foundation for continued progress and reform.

The Black Lawyers Association (BLA) also congratulated Minister Barbara Creecy and Ms Simelane on their appointments as Ministers for Transport and Justice and Constitutional Development, respectively. ‘We further congratulate Deputy Ministers Mr Mkhuleko Hlengwa and Mr Andries Nel, respectively, following their appointments to the Cabinet of the Republic of South Africa’s seventh administration. Your expertise, leadership and dedication to public service make your appointment an excellent fit for the roles you have been appointed for,’ the BLA said.

The BLA pointed out that the important tasks ahead requires that all stakeholders work together and exchange ideas on how best to serve the citizens of the country. ‘This, at a time when we walk into the next 30 years of democracy, at a time that requires transformation on many fronts, particularly in the legal profession, the judiciary in particular as well as the clarion call to change briefing patterns in our country,’ the BLA added.
