The Women in Law Awards launch and workshop, which was introduced in Cape Town on 28 February was attended by attorney and conveyancer, Ncumisa Nongogo; Founder of the Women in Law Awards, Rehana Khan Parker; General Manager at Multichoice, Southern Africa Region, Rebotile Bopape; Chairperson of the Legal Practice Council, Hlaleleni Kathleen Matolo-Dlepu; and Director of the Women in Law Awards, Asha Singhania.

The Women in Law Awards (WOZA) was officially launched in Cape Town on 28 February. According to a press statement released by WOZA, the awards are committed to transforming the legal profession and to facilitate gender parity by honouring female legal practitioners who have made a remarkable difference in the legal profession. The panel of judges was introduced at the launch.
The statement added that the panel will be critical on facilitating a fair, transparent, impartial and ethical selection process. Members of the adjudication panel are as follows –
- Hlaleleni Kathleen Matolo-Dlepu – Chairperson of the Legal Practice Council (LPC);
- Ncumisa Nongogo – attorney and conveyancer;
- Rebotile Bopape – General Manager Legal at Multichoice, Southern Africa Region;
- Stephanie Brown – Associate General Counsel Downstream Mediterranean/Middle East/SW Asia/Africa, Shell South Africa Energy (Pty) Ltd; and
- Sashi Nchito Kateka – Council Member of the Southern African Development Community Lawyers Association (SADC LA) – Zambia.
The nomination process was opened on 1 March and will close on 18 April. There are 23 categories under the following sectors –
- law firms;
- individuals;
- government; and
- the pinnacle award, which will go to a female legal practitioner who displays iconic achievements, embracing thought, innovation, leadership, and empowerment of other women and contribution to the law.
The adjudication panel will finalise their selections by 15 May. The winners will be announced at the WOZA Awards gala dinner in August. For more information on the awards and categories, visit www.woza.today.
